Webspace

Webspace is disk space on another computer where you will put all your web files. Most Internet Service Providers supply some free webspace when you sign up but if not then there are loads of free webspace providers that provide webspace, normally you will be forced to display ads or have popup ads with free providers.

Where you get your webspace from is irrelevant as you will require the same information.

If you have webspace provided from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you are halfway there. If you don't have webspace at present you will have to find a free provider.

Use your favorite search engine and search for "free web hosts" or "free webspace". Find one you like and sign up - normally this will involve picking a username and password and filling in lots of useless market research questions. Make sure you make note of all the details they provide and the username and password you have chosen.

The information you need whether from your ISP or a free host is :

  • Host Address - This can have several names including :
    • FTP Address
    • Remote Address
    • IP Address
Whichever name is used it means the same thing, the address of the remote FTP Server.
  • Username - The username provided by your ISP or the username you chose with a free host
  • Password - The password provided by your ISP or the password you chose with a free host

Your webspace will be measured in megabytes and how much space you get will vary according to the provider.

If you have set up your webspace and have all the above details then let's look at FTP Clients.
